Mercedes states that the G 580, officially equipped with EQ Technology, surpasses the standard G Wagon in off-road performance.
Mercedes-Benz India has confirmed that its all-electric G-Class, dubbed the G 580 with EQ Technology, will officially launch in India on January 9, 2025. The company may also reveal pricing details on the same day. The G 580 made its initial appearance in concept form at the Bharat Mobility Show in January before its global sales began in mid-2024. Mercedes-Benz describes the new G-Class electric as an uncompromised vehicle superior in off-road capabilities compared to its combustion engine counterpart. The name G 580 with EQ Technology reflects a new naming convention for electric vehicles from Mercedes, emphasizing that it remains true to the G-Class heritage while being powered by batteries.
The design of the G 580 closely mirrors that of the G 450d but includes minor modifications such as a redesigned grille and discrete EQ badges. Aerodynamic improvements have been made, including a new A-pillar and a front roof spoiler lip, enhancing its efficiency with a lower drag coefficient. The interior remains largely unchanged from the standard G-Class model but includes updates to the switchgear for EV-specific functions.
The G 580 is equipped with four electric motors, one at each wheel, collectively providing 587hp and 1,165Nm of torque. It boasts impressive specifications like a sub-five-second 0-100kph time and a top speed of 180kph. Its 116kWh battery, shared with the EQS, supports up to 200kW fast charging and offers a range of 470km. The model retains its robust off-road capabilities with new suspension systems and virtual differential locks for enhanced torque vectoring. Unique features include the G-Turn for 720-degree rotations, G-Steering for tighter turning, and a low-speed crawler mode.
While Mercedes is set to update the S-Class and the mid-lifecycle for the GLE and GLS SUVs internationally, these models are not scheduled to enter the Indian market in 2025. The current versions of the GLE and GLS received updates in 2024 and will continue to be available in India throughout 2025. The S-Class will also remain unchanged in India for an additional year.
