Eyeing a new scheme for domestic electronic components manufacturing, a MeitY official stated that the electronics industry needs to share production data for sound policy development.
A MeitY official stated on Friday that the electronics industry must provide production statistics for effective policy-making, while the government has access to import and export data.
In an event organised by CII in partnership with the India Electronics and Cellular Association (ICEA) to develop a resilient supply chain for the electronics and semiconductor industry, MeitY Scientist G and Group Coordinator Asha Nangia testified that production data is shared based on current estimates from industry bodies like the ICEA.
Nangia also emphasised the importance of having accurate production data for policy formulation. She noted that while the government can access import and export data through the Discretionary Grants Information System (DGIS), the industry must provide production statistics to support effective policymaking.
ICEA has reported that mobile phone production has surged approximately 18.5 times, rising from ₹189 billion in 2014-15 to ₹3.5 trillion in 2022-23. Similarly, mobile phone exports have increased about 57.5 times, from ₹15.66 billion in 2014-15 to ₹900 billion in 2022-23.
Nangia mentioned that, according to available information, the Ministry has been advocating for various types of manufacturing. She added that discussions are underway for a new scheme to support domestic electronic component manufacturing.
She noted that not all components are produced in India, nor will they be, but she stressed the need to build a resilient supply chain to safeguard the manufacturing sector against wars, pandemics, or other geopolitical issues.
