Speaking about MediaTek’s plan for the ongoing year he informed that last year for the first time the company has send 47 engineers to their headquarter for the smartphone design program as an initiative to support the Make in India program in collaboration with MeitY. “This year we are again going to send around 45 engineers to our HQ. We will be dividing the training into two phases. The first phase will be in India where 91 engineers is going to participate. The second phase will see 45 engineers going to get trained at our headquarted in Hsinchu, Taiwan, informed Malik.
MediaTek’s sole motive behind this program is to promote ‘Design in India’ on a larger scale. For the company believes that once the design ecosystem in India takes off, the component ecosystem will start kicking in which will help the industry determine the real shape of Make in India for the electronics and smartphone manufacturing category.
When asked how important India market is for MediaTek, Malik replied, “India is one of the most important market for us now. This year there is a forecast of around 154 million smartphones and close to 137 million feature phones being sold in India for this year we see a lot of churn from feature phones to smart phones. Therefore, we are focusing strongly on the Indian mobile market at present”.
