February 6, 2015: As per some reports, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is planning to manufacture phones in India. A report published in Digitimes says that Chinese OEM Inventec is considering setting up a manufacturing plant at a leased factory in Chennai. The plant is said to be the now idle Nokia’s Chennai plant.
However, Inventec has refused to share any details about starting manufacturing at Nokia’s shut Chennai plant. The report read “he production lines are likely to roll out smartphones and other devices for China-based Xiaomi Technology initially, according to industry watchers.”
The production at this plant is anticipated to begin at the end of the second quarter or the beginning of third quarter of 2015.
The Chinese handset maker recently announced its plans to set up a R&D centre in Bengaluru, its maiden facility outside the home country.
“We have always stated that India is one of our most important markets. We are in process of signing the lease on a facility in Bangalore, which will be our R&D unit. This is the first one outside China,” Xiaomi India head Manu Jain said.
