Wednesday, August 21, 2013: The Chandigarh administration as per its energy saving initiative across the city has planned to replace the existing ordinary streetlights with light emitting diodes (LED) in various sectors. Eventually, LED lights will be installed in the entire city. These LED lights will be installed in sector 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, 31, 32, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, Dhanas, Maloya and Manimajra. These places will sport LED lights in the coming months.
LED streetlights have become a necessity due to its advantages. It is energy efficient because it can help save 50 to 70 per cent energy when compared to the high pressure sodium lamp. Moreover, it lasts longer than those lamps. In addition to it, LED provides up to 8 times more brightness than the incandescent lamps without harmful emissions. Apart from this, highly-focused LED optical system projects a regular rectangular beam pattern in turn reduces glare and thus, lessens fatigue of vehicle drivers.
Moreover, LED lights provide the option of experimenting with differently coloured elements to mix red, green and blue hues. During dusk and dawn, a combination of blue and green lights can be beamed in order to complement red glow of the sun. This also provides better visibility to the vehicle drivers and the pedestrians.
