The Mumbai-based infrastructure conglomerate will construct a grid-connected solar project in rural Bihar with a multi-million dollar investment.
On Monday, Larsen And Toubro (L&T) announced securing a contract from the state government to construct a 185 MW solar plant integrated with a 254 MWh battery energy storage system in Bihar. According to L&T’s categorisation, the contract is valued between Rs 1,000 crore and Rs 2,500 crore, equivalent to 134 million USD to 335 million USD.
The solar project is located in Kajra village, in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district. According to the company’s official statement, the plant will play a crucial role in the state’s strategy to use renewable energy for sustainable solutions, address climate change challenges, and fulfil increasing energy demands.
Besides, the battery energy storage system will be designed to store surplus solar energy during times of low demand, ensuring it can be released when demand increases. This capability will not only optimise energy usage but will also enhance grid stability in rural areas, claims L&T.
The system will manage fluctuations in power generation, regulating frequency, and supporting voltage levels. Moreover, a black start feature will enable it to swiftly re-energise the grid in the event of an outage.
L&T has also stated that the company’s power transmission and distribution segment has secured the order. However it has not disclosed when the project will be commissioned and start operation.
A. Ravindran, Senior Vice President and Head of the Renewable Strategic Business Group within L&T’s Power Transmission and Distribution (PT&D) segment mentioned that this project is a significant addition to their renewable EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) portfolio, which includes solar and wind projects totalling 18 GWp, both commissioned and under development.
Ravindran also noted their involvement in managing over 1.5 GWh of storage capacity for battery energy storage systems, highlighting their established role as a preferred EPC partner for global developers.
Larsen and Toubro (L&T) is a $27 billion Indian multinational involved in EPC projects, manufacturing, and services globally. It specialises in renewable energy solutions such as solar generation, energy storage systems, transmission networks, and digital energy solutions.
