Thursday, September 18, 2014: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to install around 300,000 LED street-lights across the city. After the successful execution of their trial of light saver project by installing 300 LED street-lights in Kolkata, the state is now determined to go forward with it by installing the energy saving option in the entire city now.
KMC participated in the global trial of LED outdoor lighting which was organised by The Climate Group (TCG), an International NGO, in 2011-12. LED (light-emitting diode) lights have a lifespan of around 10 to 12 years or 50,000 hours of burning with better directional and visibility, on the other hand, normal filament bulbs can only be used for few months.
The LEDs installation helped in achieving 52 per cent of energy saving. The cost of project was evaluated to be Rs 13.2 million. The LED venture was co-founded by the power ministry through the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, and the KMC.
