Wednesday, August 21, 2013: Soon, the fear-struck Kamduni roads will lit up, thanks to a group of activists including the Park Street survivor, who are installing solar lights in a village without a streetlight. City’s top corporate houses and renewable energy experts are interested in the initiative. As part of the Green Tara Social Initiative, the first four solar panels will be installed in Kamduni in the month of September.
The project will also be extended to all the dark pockets in the city as well as on the outskirts, where women hesitate to step out post sunset. According to sources, the initiative has received a green signal from the office of the Chief Minister.
The initiative is a vision of the Park Street rape survivor and women’s activist, Santasree Chaudhury. The helpline ‘Survival of Victims of Social Justice’ is jointly run by them. Last month, they paid a visit to Kamduni rape victim’s family in order to distribute solar lanterns.
“I know there was no dearth of light when I went through the torture. But, I can imagine how terrible it must have been for the Kamduni victim, who had to walk these dark lanes,” said the Park Street rape survivor, The Times of India reported. “When we saw the women, huddled inside their ill-lit shanties, we thought we must light up their lives. If solar lights are installed in their homes and on roads, it will give them a sense of security,” said Santasree.
