Indian power company JSW Energy has commenced the construction of its battery energy storage system in Rajasthan.
On Monday, in a regulatory filing, Indian renewable energy services provider JSW Energy announced the initiation of construction for a one gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage project in Fatehgarh, Rajasthan.
The company officially stated that it had recently bagged the project from the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI). It is aimed to be commissioned by June 2025. The engineering work and equipment ordering were completed earlier. Moreover, JSW Energy has also been allotted a capacity of 6800 tonnes per annum under the SECI Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme.
Per the company’s announcement, the project comprises two installations, each capable of storing 500 MWh and designed for a two-hour storage cycle. It will be implemented under a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model, with ownership transferred to the off-taker after 12 years.
The commencement of this project marks JSW Energy’s foray into the energy storage services business. Battery storage, or battery energy storage systems (BESS), are mechanisms designed to capture energy generated by renewable sources such as solar and wind, allowing for its storage and subsequent release during periods of high demand.
This initiative underscores JSW Energy’s focus on bolstering energy storage infrastructure. The storage capacity and cycle duration aim to enhance grid stability and reliability while facilitating renewable energy integration.
As Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, said, with this project, JSW Energy intends to help advance Rajasthan’s energy sector by advocating for sustainable and robust power solutions in the area.
Besides, the company has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with JSW Steel Ltd. to gradually provide an extra 85,000-90,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, alongside 7,20,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green oxygen, until 2030.
On Monday afternoon, JSW Energy’s shares were trading at Rs 630.30, marking a 0.78% increase on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
