The partnerships will leverage India’s engineering talent and transitioning towards more cost-effective unmanned systems
JSW Defence Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of the $24 billion JSW Group, has partnered with Shield AI, a U.S.-based defense technology firm, to indigenize and manufacture the V-BAT, a Group 3 Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), in India. The partnership would solidify the nation’s defense capabilities by localizing advanced military technology production.
As part of this partnership, JSW Group plans to invest approximately $90 million over the next two years, with $65 million allocated in the first year. This investment will establish a global compliance program and a manufacturing facility to ensure proper technology licensing and provide workforce training. The initiative will enable JSW to create a local supply chain and develop an advanced facility in India for manufacturing, assembling, and testing V-BAT aircraft.
The partnership has a high chance of supporting the huge volume of production, meeting the expectations of Indian defense sectors, and turning India into an international production hub for Shield AI. The V-BAT is a highly versatile unmanned aerial system (UAS) that combines fixed-wing efficiency with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities, enabling it to operate in diverse and constrained environments. Its design makes it particularly suited for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, where mobility, rapid deployment, and operational flexibility are crucial.
Brandon Tseng, President and Co-Founder of Shield AI, highlighted the importance of this partnership in leveraging India’s engineering talent and transitioning towards more cost-effective unmanned systems. He noted that Group 3 UAS drones like the V-BAT can accomplish missions traditionally handled by larger aircraft at a fraction of the cost. This reflects a market shift towards swarms of lower-cost, AI-piloted UAS drones. Moreover, the strategic partnership between the two firms paints a picture of significant advancement in the country’s defense manufacturing capabilities.
