Monday, August 26, 2013: The industry is confident that another extension of the deadline for the implementation of the Electronics and IT Goods (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order will not be needed. Though the deadline for implementation was extended twice, the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) has registered only 10 per cent of the products till date. According to a BIS official, out of 225-230 product applications received by the department, 23 have been registered till date. He stated that the department is hiring more officers to clear applications in order to fast-track the whole process.
According to the order that was issued last year, certain electronic products sold in the Indian market should comply with BIS specifications. The products are laptops, notebooks, tablets, desktops, printers and scanners. The deadline to comply with the norms is 3rd of October, 2013.
“Whatever products were to be tested have been tested. There is no additional stock or existing product that needs to be tested,” said Anwar Shirpurwala, Manufacturers’ Association of Information Technology (MAIT), Executive Director. “Now, what we are waiting for is the registration; we have worked out a mechanism with BIS under which the registrations are now being expedited. So, hopefully by the first week of September, the registrations would be done,” he added, Business Standard reported.
