India’s LTE smartphone installed base has crossed 150 million units in the second quarter, and is set to surpass the USA market in next one year, Counterpoint said in a report.
LTE capable smartphones contributed to 96 percent of smartphone shipments in the quarter. However, in terms of installed base almost half of the smartphones are still only 3G or 2G capable.
According to ET Telecom, India’s overall handset market remained flat while smartphone market grew by modest 4 percent YoY during Q2 2017. The smartphone segment contributed to close to half of the total handset market in Q2 2017. The segment in value terms grew 25 percent year-on-year due to increasing smartphone average seeling price (ASP) driven by mature users.
Like China, the top five brands contributed to almost 70 percent of the total smartphone market. Although local brands grew during the quarter but are still unable to find their place among the top five smartphone players in third successive quarter, the agency said.
