IndianOil And Indian Navy Sign MoU For Hydrogen Fuel Cell Tech In Heavy-Duty E-Mobility

IndianOil partners with the Indian Navy to launch an innovative green hydrogen fuel cell bus, marking a major leap towards sustainable heavy-duty transportation solutions.

In a significant advancement towards developing sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions, IndianOil has achieved a major milestone by providing a green hydrogen fuel cell bus to the Indian Navy. This pivotal moment was celebrated with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to spearhead the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell technology in heavy-duty e-mobility. The signing ceremony took place at Nau Sena Bhawan, New Delhi, in the presence of notable figures, including Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff, and S M Vaidya, Chairman of IndianOil, along with other senior officials from both IndianOil and the Indian Navy. The MoU was formally exchanged between Vice Admiral Deepak Kapoor, Controller of Logistics for the Indian Navy, and Dr. Kannan Chandrasekaran, Executive Director of IndianOil.

Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi shared his thoughts on the partnership, highlighting that the cooperation between IndianOil and the Indian Navy is deeply rooted in a strong trust. He mentioned their plans to commence testing one of the hydrogen buses, emphasizing a significant interest in expanding the use of eco-friendly transport solutions. He expressed gratitude towards IndianOil for choosing the Indian Navy as their strategic partner and stated that the bus will display the Navy’s motto, emphasizing readiness and future orientation.

S M Vaidya, Chairman of IndianOil, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting that the introduction of the advanced green hydrogen fuel cell bus to the Indian Navy marks a significant milestone in their collective efforts towards sustainability and environmental responsibility. He emphasized IndianOil’s commitment to innovation and green technology. Vaidya further remarked that as they continue to develop innovative solutions that anticipate future needs, IndianOil remains a leader in the advancement of green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.

It is also noteworthy that IndianOil is currently managing a fleet of 15 fuel cell buses across Delhi-NCR and Gujarat, achieving a combined mileage of 300,000 kilometres, with each bus expected to cover at least 20,000 kilometres. This initiative is designed to promote hydrogen and fuel cell technology specifically for heavy-duty e-mobility, placing the Indian Navy at the forefront of evaluating this innovative technology in partnership with IndianOil, India’s leading energy company.

This project also involves assessing the performance of fuel-cell electric buses in the challenging climatic conditions of the Delhi NCR region, analyzing how local fuel and air quality influence the performance of fuel-cell systems and vehicles, and determining the effectiveness, durability, and operational reliability of fuel cell buses intended for public fleet use.
