It will help monitor shipping activities, deter unauthorized intrusions, and safeguard India’s maritime interests in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The Indian Navy is set to enhance its maritime surveillance by acquiring 10 TAPAS-BH drones, advanced unmanned aerial vehicles developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This move highlights the Navy’s commitment to indigenous technology and underscores the strategic importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in protecting vital shipping routes in the Indian Ocean.

TAPAS-BH (Tactical Airborne Platform for Aerial Surveillance – Beyond Horizon) is developed by DRDO, aligning with India’s push for self-reliance in defense technology under the “Make in India” initiative. TAPAS-BH drones can be deployed for real-time surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence gathering, significantly enhancing situational awareness.

Deploying these drones in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is essential for monitoring maritime activities and securing vital trade routes. The Indian Navy’s decision demonstrates a broader strategy to enhance national defense capabilities through self-reliance in military technology, aligned with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

When speaking about the strategic importance of the location, Andaman and Nicobar Islands are situated near the Malacca Strait, one of the world’s busiest and most critical shipping lanes, making it vital for regional security. The deployment of these UAVs will help monitor shipping activities, deter unauthorized intrusions, and safeguard India’s maritime interests in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Despite initial challenges with performance metrics like altitude and endurance, the armed forces have confidence in the ongoing improvements from DRDO. These drones are expected to greatly enhance India’s surveillance capabilities along its maritime borders, especially in the context of rising regional tensions. The TAPAS drones will undergo thorough testing and evaluation prior to full operational deployment. Previous trials have shown their capabilities, including successful flight tests over the Arabian Sea from multiple bases.
