Thursday, October 17, 2013: The solar industry looks like a very promising industry for India. And now what can be called as one of the biggest milestones, India will soon get the world’s largest solar project. Called Ultra-Mega Green Solar Power Project, it is aimed to produce a total of 4 GW of solar power eventually. And if the goal is attained, the amount will be twice as large as India’s current solar power production, reports CleanTechnica.
If this project is realised, an impressive 6,000 million kWh per year will be fed into the national grid. The location of the solar energy project has been chosen near Sambhar Lake, which is almost fifty miles from Jaipur, Rajasthan. The location was chosen keeping in mind the high irradiation levels and availability of open space.
In total, 20,000 acres will be used for the project. It is still unclear if PV or concentrated solar will used, or a hybrid.
According to the report, the first phase of the mega project will be constructing 1 GW through a collaboration between Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Limited (REIL) and SSL, the Solar Energy Corporation of India, and the Power Grid Corporation of India. SJVN, a hydro-electric power plant developer, will also contribute. The first phase could be completed by as early as 2016.
Funding for the project may come from a newly passed bill for Corporate Social Responsibility, which requires 2 per cent annual net profits from certain companies to be used for projects for the social good.
