Indian Space and Research Organization (ISRO) is planning to mass-produce solar cell technology in India. The aim of ISRO is to strengthen India’s astronomical presence in the world and for this ISRO has imported technology from US and with the help several technologies it is going to manufacture it.
The contract for this project has been given to Bharat Electronics Ltd. and the production will be conducted at ISRO Bangalore under the management of ISRO scientists. The solar cells for satellites in space are highly efficient unlike those which are used in land.
K Sivan, chairman of ISRO told that India is totally dependent on US imports for the satellites and India still faces many restrictions for importing solar cells in bulk, that is why this project is important to undertake.
ISRO chief informed about the cost, “about 1,500 solar cells are needed for producing a small remote sensing satellite. Around 10,000-15,000 solar cells are imported for a big satellite like Gsat (communication satellite)”.
