5G smartphones in India will be available in India by 2021 at the most depending on the network providers and manufacturers in boosting 5G rollout
According to industry reports, 5G smartphones will debut in India by late 2019 or early 2020 considering that telecom equipment makers and service providers are engaging themselves in rolling out the new-age technology. According to Navkendar Singh, associate research director, International Data Corporation (IDC) India, 5G devices in the mass segment that constitutes over 80 per cent market share would debut by 2020.
5G for the mass
Affordable 5G smartphones are slated to arrive in India by 2021. The experts expect India to gear up with its 5G ecosystem with the introduction of premium smartphones initially and then the ones for mass adoption would be launched. India is yet to ramp up its 5G scenario while countries like the US, Japan, Korea and China have planned to launch 5G devices by early 2019.
Industry experts
While smartphone majors have been dealing with their 5G smartphones and network providers have started their field trials, experts and analysts opine that the mass availability would kickstart by 2021 at the most. Brands such as OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi have already forayed into the 5G segment by launching their respective devices and eyeing to outperform each other in the upcoming years.
5G smartphones globally
Carl Pei had earlier told ET that OnePlus would introduce its 5G devices globally and it would be the first brand to do so. Huawei is also set to launch its device globally by mid-2019. Keeping in line with the competitors, Vivo India has informed that it would introduce its premium 5G smartphones at the global level and India provided network operators expand their bandwidth for better 5G performance.
The government of India has been pushing the telecom industry for a faster rollout of 5G as it projects to have an impact of over $1 trillion.
