Tuesday, September 03, 2013: India having the third largest population of Internet users is being faced with increasing threats of organised crime and cyber threats. As per a report by Kaspersky Lab, the total number of phishing attacks more than doubled over the past year amounting to 3.7 million people. Also, a recent Norton Internet Security Threat Report has stated that India has witnessed a 280 per cent increase in both these infections in 2012 with more number of phishing and virus-bearing emails that target small Indian businesses.
As stated on timesofindia.indiatimes.com, all these have resulted in increasing threat for the emerging IT powerhouse. In response to these threats, India’s Joint Working Group on Cyber Security announced a number of recommendations towards addressing this issue which includes the introduction of a cyber security capacity building framework, the establishment of training facilities, and the creation of a multi-disciplinary center of excellence.
As Eric Bassel, the senior director and deputy CEO of SANS Institute says, “This is a positive development, as one of the key challenges we all face in relation to cyber security is recruiting, training and retaining technical talent to ensure the protection of our sensitive and valuable information.”
Bassel also stressed the shortage of professionals to deal with such cyber attacks as they keep increasing with time. He stated that India is indeed an attractive target with very few cyber security professionals.
