- TRAI chief R S Sharma added that 5G technology is strategic for India
- He added that the government, NITI Aayog, and all stakeholders should support whatever has to be done from a strategic point of view
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) Chairman R S Sharma spoke in favour of the use of domestically manufactured equipment in core telecom networks where most of the data of users are managed. He added that 5G technology is strategic for India and telecom companies possess control over their core network by using domestically manufactured gears.
5G is strategically important
Sharma added that TRAI has given a recommendation two years back to the government. It focussed on why it is important for the country to manufacture telecom equipment locally. The recommendation was given after consulting all stakeholders. He further commented that if the core network is coming from somebody else and if what is happening inside is not known, it will be the best way for people to get all the information. It is strategically important to control that.
All stakeholders should join hands
The TRAI chief further added that the companies might lose control over some peripheral devices, handsets. It cannot afford to lose control of the core network. He added that the government, NITI Aayog, and all stakeholders should support whatever has to be done from a strategic point of view.
Sharma further added that 5G is quantum jump over 4G and time to communicate on 5G is very less. He commented that the country may not need driver-less cars, remote surgery but definitely needs smart cities, smart energy, fixed wireless access and there are many used cases.
