Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad India is switching all of its taxiway edge lights from halogen lamps to LEDs. The installation is only the second airport in India and the first in the southern portion of the country to convert all the lights along the runways to LEDs. About 75 percent of the runway installation work has been already completed.
GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd, which operates the airport, said the installation complements the airport’s recently achieved Carbon Neutral Airport (Level 3 + Neutrality) recognition. In addition to the taxiway conversion, the airport has also already converted 19,500 of the more than 26,000 conventional lamps into LEDs. Without the new taxiway lights, total savings from this LED lighting conversion is about 2.2 million kWh’s annually.
The conversion of the 500 halogen taxiway lights to LED lights took a mere six days.A significant proportion of the airport’s total daytime energy requirement is met by a captive 5 MW solar power plant that was commissioned recently.
