Tuesday, August 06, 2013: It seems going Solar is becoming the trend. The Hubli-Dharwad police commissionerate is considering to upgrade traffic lights with the latest technology, that is harnessing solar power. The tenders for the project have been invited by the commissionerate. So, by next month the city roads will sport solar power run traffic signaling system. An amount of Rs.50,00,000 has been sanctioned by the government for this work.
As many as 30 signals operates in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad. Out of these 30 signals, 24 run on solar power and the rest utilize expensive electrical power. The authorities are going to add four signals to the already existing traffic signals.
Moreover, energy efficient LEDs will be used for lighting traffic signals as LEDs are brighter than bulbs. There is plan to increase the size of traffic poles because many road users are not able to see the poles which were installed many years ago.
According to N S Patil, ACP for Traffic, unlike HDMC, the department plans to install traffic lights with the purpose of preventing power related issues. Alternative arrangement will counteract any problem that will surface in solar signals. Alternative arrangement refers to using electricity connection, The Times of India reported.
