As per a report by Financial Times, Huawei is planning to build its own chipset factory in Shanghai, China. It added that this is supposed to act as the company’s best solution to US ban and keep continuing in the hardware business. It added that the factory is said to also manufacture parts for its telecom hardware business.
45nm chipsets, followed by 28nm in 2021 and 20nm chipsets in 2022
The report added that the new factory is said to run by Shanghai IC R&D Center, Huawei’s partner. It is said to be an experiment till it starts making products for user-end products for now. It added that the plan is to start by building 45nm chipsets, followed by 28nm in 2021 and 20nm chipsets in 2022. The report said that such platforms are useful for IoT devices. It added that by 2022 Huawei will eventually be able to yield 20nm chips that would be useful for the 5G base station business.
Recently, Huawei introduced its Mate 40 flagship smartphone series in China. It came with the company’s first-ever 5nm-based Kirin 9000 processor. Recently, Samsung Electronics’ display unit has received licenses from U.S. authorities to continue supplying certain display panel products to Huawei Technologies, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. From 15th September, new curbs had barred U.S. companies from supplying or serving Huawei. .
