Exploring new research avenues, Hindustan Zinc is focusing on zinc’s use in batteries and its potential to replace lithium as a part of its business and clean energy transition.
On Monday, Hindustan Zinc Ltd, a subsidiary of the Vedanta group, announced its focus on future-readiness by exploring new applications of zinc in batteries as a replacement for lithium at the 58th Annual General Meeting held at Udaipur.
Alongside this focus as a part of its ‘strategic energy transition’, the company aims to enhance production volume, reduce production costs, and create value for stakeholders. Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, highlighted these objectives in the event.
As the world looks forward to a cleaner and more sustainable future, the firm testified that it is working to support the global energy transition by exploring new applications of zinc in batteries.
The company’s CEO, Arun Misra, noted that although lithium batteries are currently prominent, challenges such as the limited domestic supply of the metal and safety concerns with lithium batteries are significant hurdles for the energy transition worldwide.
He further stated that zinc offers a safe, stable, and viable alternative to lithium in batteries for varied usage in the electronic industry.
According to reports by the Economic Times, with one of the largest product portfolios in zinc, lead, and silver, Hindustan Zinc is currently seeking new applications to support the energy transformation.
The company is also the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer and third-largest silver producer.
