Aiming for sustainability, Hindustan Zinc is integrating 450 MW of renewable energy into its operations across Rajasthan through a partnership with RE firm Serentica.
Hindustan Zinc has launched a major renewable energy project in Rajasthan, collaborating with an Indian firm, Serentica Renewables. Through this initiative, the zinc producer aims to incorporate sustainable energy practices into its procedures.
Under the deal, Serentica will deliver 450 MW of continuous renewable energy to Hindustan Zinc, starting with a 180 MW solar project from its Bikaner power park.
However, no financial details of the deal were disclosed.
The renewable energy integration is expected to cut Hindustan Zinc’s carbon dioxide emissions by about 0.45 million tons annually. Once fully operational, the Bikaner power park, covering 1,200 acres, aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 2.7 million tons per year.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, noted that the project advances their goal of achieving net zero by 2050 or earlier. He said it represents a significant step in reducing reliance on conventional energy and progressing towards full decarbonisation.
Akshay Hiranandani, CEO of Serentica Renewables, praised the project’s prompt execution and impact on India’s clean energy sector. He commented that the early commissioning of the Bikaner phase will give way towards expanding the initiative, including wind energy. This renewable energy project supports Hindustan Zinc’s 2022 goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, including a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030. Last year, the company cut the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions by 14% from 2020 through improved efficiency and technology.
