Thursday, August 22, 2013: According to the market analytics firm, Displaybank, part of IHS, the global demand for precursor, which is a material used in manufacturing of LEDs is supposed to double from 2012-2016 on account of surge in the market for LED lighting.
The market for precursor is expected to rise to 69 tons in 2016, up 114 per cent from 32 tons in the year 2012. Precursor is utilized in the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) manufacturing process for the purpose of prparing LEDs.
“The boom in the precursor market reflects the rising operating rate of MOCVD as the LED lighting market grows,” said Richard Son, Senior LED Analyst at IHS, EETIndia reported. Leading preorcursors include trimethylgallium (TMoGa), trimethylindium (TMIn), trimethyl aluminium (TMA), triethylgallium (TEGa) and C2Mg2, where TMGa is popularly used and accounts for about 94 per cent of total demand.
According to IHS, the global shipments of MOCVD equipment is supposed to increase by 17 per cent in the year 2013. countries like South Korea, Taiwan and China, are the major buyers of MOCVD equipment accounting for around 80 per cent of the global demand of precursors. China will account for 45 per cent of the global demand of precursors in the year 2016.
