First Solar, a well-known US-based company that is into manufacturing of solar PV and integration solutions, is reportedly planning to set up solar farm clusters in the country that will be located close to major industrial hubs across the country.
“These solar PV clusters will be located close to industrial estates and seek to address the power supply gap for local companies,” Sujoy Ghosh, country head-India, First Solar Power India, was quoted in Business Line report. “Since such projects are modular in nature, we will have the flexibility to set up the capacity as required,” he said.
“In US First Solar has helped set up two 550 MW solar PV farms; it is possible to set up much bigger farms than what we have seen in India so far,” he said. According to Ghosh, most of industrial units in the country, especially down in the southern part of the country, face power shortage which is why the prospect of developing solar farm in the region is viable.
“The model will tie up with local potential industrial buyers and sign up for power purchase pacts. It will help us and similar developers to achieve financial closure for the project as they will become bankable,” he explained.
