Monday, February 17, 2014: In just days after US took India to WTO over solar power projects’ implications that favours home equipment in India, the New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah said that there should be more local manufacturing. He also said that there is no need of worry, with US’ World Trade Organisation complaint.
He said, “There is no need to worry about it (WTO complaint). We are handling the issue. We will have to concentrate on manufacturing locally instead of depending on foreign countries.” The country needs to cooperate with other nations for technologies, it is high time that we start manufacturing equipment as we cannot depend on others forever, said Abdullah in a Business Standard report, adding, “Though we cannot achieve our target alone and we will have to coordinate with other nations.”
On Monday, the US had challenged the domestic content requirement in India’s Solar mission at the WTO. US alleged India for discrimination against international norms, including WTO laws. Anand Sharma, the commerce minister had said, “We will respond in the WTO adequately. We will give a response at the WTO,” in a statement over the WTO complaint.
