Amazon plans to introduce around 1,000 electric trucks in their delivery convoy to reduce their carbon emission in a span of over five years. The e-trucks are to be deployed across different payload categories through their logistics service partners.
The e-commerce giant has partnered with the business division of VE Commercial Vehicles Limited, Eicher Trucks and Buses, to deploy at least 50 zero-emission trucks in the coming months at major delivery hubs like Gurugram, Delhi and Manesar. They aim to use the advanced digital capabilities of Eicher’s electric trucks on the established electric vehicle platform, which is already in use in bus applications.
Eicher is ready to provide trucks with deck lengths varying from eight to twenty-four feet, accustomed to different cargo stacking configurations. The option of charging speeds will be provided according to the need of the operations. The availability and accessibility of charging infrastructure, the charging time limitations and other aspects will be taken into consideration while introducing the vehicles.
In support of this venture Sudhendu Jyoti Sinha, the Adviser from NITI Aayog, said, “The collaboration between Amazon and VECV marks a significant milestone in the collective effort to decarbonize freight transportation, heralding a pivotal step in advancing electric mobility in India. As an integral part of our e-FAST program, this partnership promises to yield invaluable insights for the broader electric mobility sector in the country. By embracing such initiatives, we pave the way for a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.”
Amazon has previously shown initiative to adapt electric mobility in their logistics department across the country. They have deployed similar EVs in their delivery fleet in over 400 cities in India. This collaboration between the companies aims to eradicate Amazon’s carbon emissions by 2040.
