Tuesday, December 30, 2014: Energy-efficient LED street lights are all set to replace conventional street lights in the capital of India too as the municipal corporations of the city are all prepared to make Delhi a smart city as soon as possible.
Last week Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu and Union Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal launched this pilot project in the city. LED lights will save more energy and will prove more environment friendly too. This lighting solution is expected to save more than Rs 7000 million in revenue for the North corporation. Naidu emphasised on progress to make Delhi a smart city and stated that converting traditional street lights to LED ones is one of the biggest steps in the line.
According to Naidu, around Rs 7000 million could be saved on energy consumption if the lighting system is converted. A smart city means the city should get round-the-clock electricity, water, transport, education facilities, solid waste management and proper sanitation services. Naidu also stressed on the need of public-private partnership model to progress the concept of smart cities further.
Power minister Goyal proposed LED street lights should be expanded across entire Delhi, which has around five lakh streetlight points. He also said that LED street lights should also reach every corner of the country, especially where there is no electricity. Goyal said the government is planning to make Delhi the model city when it comes to energy conservation.
