March 20, 2015: Canada-based, Datawind, a low-cost internet connectivity and wireless web access products company, has stated that it is planning to move 90 per cent of its manufacturing in India in the next 90 days.
“In our commitment to ‘Make in India’, we hope to generate 1000 new direct and indirect jobs in India within the next year as we work with electronics manufacturing services companies in India,” said Suneet Singh Tuli, president and CEO of DataWind, reported by the New Indian Express.
Tuli said that the company was excited with the government reversing the inverse duty structure on tablets and smartphones. This has made them think to move manufacturing from China to India.
As per Tuli, “the company will consider manufacturing LCD panels and screens for the devices and assemble them with imported and locally-sourced electronic components.”
Datawind has also revealed its pocket-friendly smartphones with prices starting from Rs 1999.
“We see this as a beginning of a new phase in Internet revolution led by mobile Internet and with Reliance Communications by our side in this new transformational journey towards a Digital India,” Tuli added.
