Tuesday, July 30, 2013: Local firms, Raasi Green Earth Energy (RGEE) and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) have undertaken the construction of the Raasi Solar Park in Tamil Nadu. The construction is underway in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu.
By January, the solar park is supposed to achieve 70 MW of capacity, but the goal is to achieve full 100 MW capacity by April 2014.
RGEE associates Larsen and Toubro are involved in building the solar park. The project is worth Rs 9.2 billion ($154m) and will be built on about 600 acres of land.
Apart from the above mentioned project, RGEE has seven more 50-100MW solar projects in Tamil Nadu.
According to Tamil Nadu’s solar energy policy 2012, it aims to install 3000MW by the year 2015. The state’s solar energy policy is a part of India’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) to increase installed capacity as well as provide tariffs to subsidize costs.
C Narasimhan, Chairman, RGEE while addressing a press conference stated that over 37 companies showed interest in setting up their units in the park. Seven companies would be signing commercial agreements with RGEE wherein two companies are based out of Germany. He added that the company’s share of investment in developing the park is around Rs 1.2 billion.
