Tuesday, December 16, 2014: Within the next few months, the Coimbatore Corporation is expected to add 2000 more street lights. As per Corporation Commissioner K Vijayakarthikeyan, the civic body has already completed the survey of street lights in the 40 wards, to reach the numbers of added areas.
The plan heads towards installation of erect poles across the added areas with the energy efficient LED bulbs. The bulbs will also be used to replace the 17,000-odd tube lights, out of almost 25,000 street lights in the area. The street light survey is been conducted by a private agency to improve the lighting efficiency in added areas.
The agency is evaluating upon the existing number of street lights in the area, type of bulbs being used, the luminosity required, new poles required and also the light required among others. The civic body has not just stopped with it; rather it has also engaged another agency, an energy auditor, to keep a check upon the accuracy of the agency study.
Now after the completion of both the study and audit by the respective agencies, the civic body has released tenders and would soon commence with the work of replacing the street lights in the added areas. However, there are few obstacles as well, like it is being tough for the Corporation to identify the correct service connection numbers for a few street light connections as the panel boards have been replaced.
The civic body is currently engaged in finding out the correct service connection numbers. After these numbers get solved, the corporation would be able to calculate up on the desired savings it would reach by replacing the tube lights with LED bulbs.
