CG Power partners with Jacobs to build a semiconductor assembly plant in Sanand, Gujarat, boosting domestic semiconductor manufacturing.
Murugappa Group’s CG Power, in collaboration with global facilities management firm Jacobs, is embarking on a transformative journey to build a new chip assembly plant in Sanand, Gujarat.
This state-of-the-art facility will produce a diverse range of semiconductor packages, from legacy types like QFN and QFP to advanced packages such as FC BGA and FC CSP. With a staggering production capacity of up to 1.5 crore units per day, the plant is poised to revolutionize industries including automotive, consumer electronics, industrial, and 5G.
This ambitious project, expected to be completed in 3-4 years, is set to be one of the fastest to commence production, sparking anticipation and excitement in the semiconductor industry.
Jacobs has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya, a central university of the Indian Railway in Vadodara, to develop a specialized curriculum for semiconductor fabrication.
The program aims to train approximately 15,000 engineers, with the course fully funded by the government. These engineers will be prepared for careers in the semiconductor industry, ensuring a skilled workforce to meet the growing demands of the sector.
Jacobs has revealed that nearly 80% of its staff are based in India and that its team has designed facilities responsible for manufacturing four out of five of the world’s computers. With 30 years of experience serving the top ten semiconductor manufacturers, Jacobs brings extensive expertise to its new project.
Meanwhile, CG Power has established a subsidiary, CG Semi Private Ltd., for its joint venture and recently held a foundation stone-laying ceremony in Sanand, Gujarat. This initiative is part of a broader government-backed plan approved in February, which includes three semiconductor plants—two in Gujarat and one in Assam—totalling an estimated investment of USD 15.3 billion.
