Friday, May 09, 2014: At a time when traditional light bulbs are seeing an end of life and LEDs are taking over, a Boston startup has gone ahead to create something beyond that. Here’s an idea that is poised to replace the traditional lighting means soon. The startup, Finally Light Bulb Company, has developed a light bulb made from induction technology, which will be developed in India.
These bulbs are created as a replacement to the incandescent light bulb and is comparatively more efficient along with being relatively inexpensive as compared to some of the LEDs in the market. According to a report from The New York Times, the engineers were able to ‘shrink down the induction device to a three-inch antenna wrapped in a copper wire’. This resulted in the creation of a magnetic field inside the bulb, that enables the ‘mercury to make ultraviolet light that interacts with a phosphor coating on the bulb to produce visible light.’
The makers call it “Acandescence.” The Boston based startup has been able to raise about $19 million in funding for this technology. The company touts that the quality of life of this bulb is similar to that of the incandescent but at a price lesser than that of LEDs.
According to the company, Finally bulb is likely to hit the shelves in July this year for $7.99 (you can pre-order it now for $9.99). They’re manufacturing it in India, and it “has almost all of its regulatory approvals,” notes the New York Times.
