Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) procured more than 1,000 LED bulbs on an “urgent basis” to be installed in street lights across the island city, replacing those which are non-functional.
According to TOI, areas which faced a problem included parts of Matunga, Dadar, Sion, King’s Circle and Mahim. It inconvenienced pedestrians and jeopardised the safety of women travelling alone.
A senior official from the power supply wing said that the new LED bulbs will be installed within a week and they will cater to all complaints from citizens and replace bulbs.
Citizens rights activist Nikhil Desai said that when he had approached officials at Dadar TT with complaints on street lights not working, he was informed that there was an acute shortage of 70W bulbs. The officials had then informed him that the bulbs would soon be replaced with LED lights.
Another official said BEST plans to replace all street lights with LED bulbs. He confirmed that the company has replaced 10 percent lights with LED and this has resulted in 40 percent energy savings and bright lighting in lanes and bylanes. The remaining 90 percent will get LED bulbs very soon
