Focusing on local advancement in chip packaging technologies, the Assam Government has leased 170 acres to Tata Group for a semiconductor facility valued at ₹270 billion.
On Tuesday, the state government of Assam signed an agreement with the Tata Group to lease more than 170 acres of land in Jagiroad, Morigaon district, for a ₹270 b illion semiconductor plant.
The lease is for 60 years, and the land is located at the former Hindustan Paper Corporation site. Tata will develop the facility, emphasising three aspects: wire bond, flip chip, and integrated systems packaging (ISP). It plans to incorporate advanced packaging technologies.
The project is anticipated to generate over 30,000 jobs, with the first phase slated to begin operations by mid-2025. The company also stated that the plant is designed to address the increasing global demand for AI, industrial, and consumer electronics.
The agreement was finalised at the sub-registrar’s office in Assam by Ranjan Bandyopadhyay of Tata Group and Dhiraj Pegu, manager (tech) and project in-charge at Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC).
District Commissioner Devasish Sharma and Tata Group officials Kaninika Thakur, Ashish Mishra, and Avinash Dhabade were other dignitaries who attended the event.
DC Sharma remarked that the day was significant for the entire state. He further stated that the land transfer is complete, and Tata Group has notified that construction will begin shortly. With approval from the PM’s cabinet, the Prime Minister had virtually laid the plant’s foundation on March 13.
According to reports, construction of the facility is scheduled to begin within 100 days. A skill development centre will be established in Jagiroad alongside the project, and training for local youth is already underway to bolster employment.
