Friday, November 21, 2014: Andhra Pradesh will be the first Indian state to get on to large energy efficiency project by supplying LED lights for domestic use and also replacing all the conventional bulbs, tube lights and solar vapour lamps being used for streetlights in municipalities and corporations with the Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights.
Saurabh Kumar, managing director for public sector Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) said that in another three to five years all the municipalities would have LED lighting, while addressing the press conference along with other renowned dignitaries.
Kumar further added that introducing LED lights in Visakhapatnam would be set as a standard for other cities and municipal corporations, leading to almost 50 per cent of power saving. He identified the biggest advantage of deploying LED lighting to be its 10 years of life.
Municipal Commissioner M. Janaki said that after the cyclone Hudhud, only 25 per cent of streetlights were left in working conditions, up on which MA&UD Minister had suggested for the total replacement of them with the LED lights. She added that so far, 12,000 of the 90,000 lights have been replaced. Panduranga Rao, Engineer-in-Chief of MA&UD suggested that while finalizing the modalities the committee would also keep the aspects of cyclone-resistance in to notice.
