AMD’s acquisition of ZT Systems’ cloud and telecom expertise, including 1,000 engineers, aims to boost its AI capabilities and better compete against Nvidia’s AI dominance.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced the acquisition of US-based ZT Systems for $4.9 billion, in a cash and stock deal, with about 75% of it being in cash.
The acquisition of ZT Systems will bring in 1,000 engineers with systems design and rack-scale solutions expertise that would augment AMD’s silicon and software capabilities.
This would enable AMD to offer more competitive solutions to hyperscale customers while improving the company’s time-to-market.
The deal is clearly aimed at competing better against rival Nvidia, which has been moving beyond just selling GPUs and looking to sell end-to-end system solutions that include pre-assembled server racks, networking equipment, and software.
This move aims to bolster AMD’s capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) chips and hardware, enhancing its ability to compete with Nvidia in the rapidly growing AI sector.
AMD plans to fund 75% of the acquisition with cash, using its existing $5.34 billion in cash and short-term investments, while the remaining 25% will be covered through stock. This strategic acquisition positions AMD to strengthen its footprint in the AI and cloud computing markets.
