Users of Bharti Airtel services on Micromax’s Canvas 2 smartphone will get a year’s voice and data free as the market leader sought to adverse Reliance Jio’s sharp discounted plans in a bitter fight for subscribers.
Backed by the offer and a marketing budget of $8-10 million (Rs 52 crore), Micromax expects to sell a minimum of 1 million Canvas 2 phones – priced at Rs 11,999 — in the next six to eight months, Rahul Sharma.
Micromax, which lost market share to Chinese players such as Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi, expects to regain some lost ground and make a dent in the Rs 10,000-15,000 price bracket where it faces competition, primarily from Samsung’s J series, and devices from the Chinese players.
Nokia is also expected to launch phones in this same price range when it re-enters India. At present, Micromax does not have any significant share in this segment. Micromax also aims to launch the model in other markets it operates.
