January 12, 2015: The trend of turning the country’s street lights into LED has spread its wings deeper into the eastern part of India as Agartala is the latest to join hands in this revolution. In fact, it will be the second city after Kolkata to be a part of the LED revolution in the east. The Tripura government has recently announced this initiative to replace all old sodium vapour and other lamps with LED lights in order to save energy by over 40 per cent.
Power and Urban Development Minister Manik Dey told reporters that the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to put up LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights in the entire Agartala city. He further stated that the project will cost a total of Rs 20 crore, which includes the installation of 35,000 LED lights. The project will be completed in three phases and the first stage (18 km) has been completed recently. The project is expected to benefit a population of half a million people.
