- ASU focuses on bolstering capabilities for 6G, IoT, machine learning, and other emerging technologies
In order to expand Arizona’s advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) has recently announced a $17.5 million investment in Arizona State University (ASU).
This expansion plan will be helpful to expand Arizona’s fan-out wafer-level packaging R&D and workforce training capabilities. It will also drive the creation of a GaN (gallium nitride) manufacturing and semiconductor research ecosystem in the state to enable future technology.
ASU also planned to release funds for equipment to enhance the capabilities of ASU’s MacroTechnology Works (MTW) in Tempe.
“The expansion of ASU’s MacroTechnology Works is another important step in enhancing Arizona’s semiconductor ecosystem,” said Governor Katie Hobbs. “These new capabilities enable first-of-its-kind training and R&D opportunities to strengthen the state’s workforce and support continued industry growth.”
“Today’s announcement represents another important step in ASU’s commitment as a university to contribute to advancing America’s domestic semiconductor manufacturing, research and development capabilities,“ said ASU President Michael Crow. “Our recent creation of a Microelectronics Workforce Development Hub and our strategic focus on the university’s MacroTechnology Works facility are both in place to assist with achieving the objectives outlined today and we look forward to working with the Arizona Commerce Authority and NXP to drive success at an accelerated rate.”
Arizona State University (ASU) is set to broaden its research efforts in advanced packaging and Gallium Nitride (GaN) technologies, with a focus on bolstering capabilities for 6G, IoT, machine learning, and other emerging technologies. The expansion will encompass workforce development through internships and collaborative university research programs. Additionally, ASU will engage in next-generation GaN research for 6G in collaboration with NXP Semiconductors in Chandler.
