- Tata Motors enhances its Pune commercial vehicle manufacturing facility’s on-site solar power capacity to 20.73 MWp.
- The project is expected to produce 17.5 million units of electricity annually, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 12,400 tonnes per year.
In a resounding reaffirmation of Tata Group’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability through innovative manufacturing practices, Tata Motors and Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) have inked a groundbreaking power purchase agreement (PPA). This strategic partnership aims to establish a 12MWp on-site solar project at Tata Motors’ Pune commercial vehicle manufacturing facility, situated in the thriving industrial hub of Pune, India.
The project is poised to be commissioned within a rapid six-month timeline following the signing of the PPA. Its overarching objective is to revolutionise green manufacturing within the company’s ecosystem, generating an impressive 17.5 million units of electricity annually. This staggering energy output is anticipated to meet an astounding 17.2% of the plant’s annualised energy needs, substantially offsetting an estimated 12,400 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
Integral to this initiative are rooftop installations, strategically enhancing the project’s overall efficiency. To put this development into perspective, this 12MWp addition supplements an existing 8.73 MWp solar capacity, propelling the total solar capacity in Pune to 20.73 MWp. As part of its long-term vision, the company is actively pursuing an expansion of the solar infrastructure at its Pune plant, aligning with the escalating demand for clean and renewable energy sources.
Mr. Vishal Badshah, Vice President of commercial vehicle operations at Tata Motors Limited, voiced the company’s commitment to sustainability and its drive towards achieving net-zero emissions. He emphasised this comprehensive strategy, which encompasses adopting renewable energy through on-site and off-site initiatives, thus decarbonising their manufacturing facilities. He underscored the significance of this collaboration highlighting its dedication to greener and more resource-efficient operations. As a “Future Ready” corporation and a signatory of the RE100 initiative, the company is actively transitioning towards renewable energy sources, with this partnership being a pivotal step in that direction.
Mr. Ashish Khanna, CEO of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, echoed these sentiments, emphasising the importance of the 12MWp PPA with Tata Motors in advancing the shared sustainability objectives of both entities. He underscored the company’s commitment to supporting the energy transition of its commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers through an array of clean energy solutions.
They previously joined forces to develop a monumental 16MWp solar power project in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, which is poised to become the largest of its kind in the state. This initiative resonates with spanning the entire power value chain, from conventional and renewable energy to power services and innovative customer solutions, including solar rooftop installations and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations.
