The 2,140 individual charging stations comprise approximately 1,200 chargers in housing communities within the Adani Electricity distribution region, 740 home-based chargers in areas supplied by Tata Power, and about 200 chargers in the distribution zones of BEST and MSEDCL.

As recent data reveals, the number of individual charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) in Mumbai’s housing societies and bungalows has soared by 328% within a year. Furthermore, about 26% of electric car owners have now installed charging stations at their residences.

Out of the 2,140 individual charging stations, an estimated 1,200 are situated in housing communities in the Adani Electricity distribution region. In contrast, 740 are home chargers in regions supplied by Tata Power, with about 200 in the BEST and MSEDCL distribution areas. Just a year prior, the city had roughly 500 private charging spots.

How Do EV Users Feel?

An EV owner from Kandivli mentioned their preference for charging their vehicle to over 80% before leaving their community. Charging at locations like malls or petrol stations could cost them almost twice as much.

Recently transitioning from a diesel vehicle to an electric one, Nitin Dossa of the Western India Automobile Association praised his eco-friendly SUV for its impressive mileage of 450km per charge, low running expenses, and minimal maintenance. He shared that there’s a growing number of both public and private charging spots throughout the city. Dossa has an EV charger at his Ridge Road bungalow, and it’s proven to be a positive experience, costing about INR 1 per kilometre for charging.

Future Plans For Chargers

A representative from Tata Power underscored the significance of housing societies in advancing e-mobility. The company is already collaborating with major builders in Mumbai and is looking to broaden this partnership.

An Adani Electricity representative shared their ambition to establish a total of 8,500 EV charging stations in the suburbs. They also highlighted their role as the favoured EV charging partner for BEST buses and other entities in Mumbai’s EV landscape. Furthermore, Adani Electricity has integrated rooftop solar panels with EV charging for several cars in a western suburbs housing society.

A BEST power supply department official clarified that EV charging installation in parking spaces is consumer-driven. BEST simply delivers electricity at rates approved by MERC once they receive a consumer’s application.
