India will get its first electric car from Hyundai ‘Kona EV’ this year. It will not be manufactured in India but will be assembled here.
Hyundai Group is reportedly working on a new platform specific to electric cars which it plans to launch in 2021. The new platform will probably focus on B and C-segment (small and medium-sized) cars.
As reported by Overdrive, the platform will be a modular structure, along the lines of Volkswagen’s MEB architecture. This means that we can expect a new line of SUVs, hatchbacks and sedans from Hyundai and Kia brands based on the new platform. These cars will also be styled differently and have a more aggressive look, the report said.
The South Korean carmaker is aiming to launch 38 eco-friendly cars, 14 of these will be all-electric, as part of its product line-up by 2025. Its luxury brand, Genesis, will launch its first electric vehicle by 2021.
Hyundai and Kia to build India-specific electric cars
India will get its first electric car from Hyundai ‘Kona EV’ this year. The compact electric SUV, like the Kia Soul EV and the Kia e-Niro, are currently derived from traditionally powered cars.
Hyundai and Kia had recently announced a big investment in Ola and revealed that a part of the investment will go into developing India-specific electric cars.
Apart from manufacturing electric cars, the investment is also aimed at developing fleet and mobility solutions, infrastructure and “nurturing best in class opportunities and offerings for aspiring driver partners” for Ola.
