Expected to ship in the second half of 2019, Intel XMM 8160 5G modem will empower 5G smartphones, computers, and gateways to 5G connectivity

Globally renowned chip-maker Intel has introduced XMM 8160 5G modem. Touted as company’s take on 5G technologies of the future, the Intel XMM 8160 5G modem will empower 5G smartphones, computers and gateways to 5G connectivity.

Intel claims that the XMM 8160 will offer peak speeds of up to 6 gigabits per second. This speed is six times faster in comparison to current LTE modems.

Cormac Conroy, corporate VP and communication and devices group GM, said “Intel’s new XMM 8160 5G modem provides the ideal solution to support large volumes for scaling across multiple device categories to coincide with broad 5G deployments. We are seeing great demand for the advanced feature set of the XMM 8160, such that we made a strategic decision to pull in the launch of this modem by half a year to deliver a leading 5G solution”.

The news has a come at a time when the whole world is preparing extensively for the deployment of 5G services. India, too is busy in conducting 5G trials all over the country.

Intel XMM 8160 capabilities and features

Intel claims that its newly announced 5G modem supports the standard for 5G New Radio, as well as 4G, 3G and 2G legacy radios in a single chip-set. The company is saying that Intel XMM 8160 will enable device manufacturers to design smaller and more power-efficient devices. The room left due to its small size will further enable smartphone, tablet and other electronic device manufacturers in adding more components inside the same form.

It also supports simultaneous connectivity (EN-DC) for both LTE and 5G. With worldwide carrier support, broad platform certification and broad OEM support, the Intel XMM 8160 modem deliver 5G capabilities that operators and device makers can rely on for their global deployments.

The modem offers advanced technology needed to support new millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum as well as sub 6 GHz 5G NR support (including FDD and TDD bands from 600 MHz to 6 GHz) and download speeds up to 6 Gbps. The industry move to mmWave and mid-band spectrum addresses the enormous need for more bandwidth for users, devices and connected machines.

Finally, the modem is designed to scale. With worldwide carrier support, broad platform certification and broad OEM support, the Intel XMM 8160 modem delivers 5G capabilities that operators and device makers can rely on for their global deployments.

Compnay is expecting to start shipping the Intel XMM 8160 5G modem by the second-half of 2019. Intel says that commercial devices including phones, PCs and broadband access gateways using the Intel XMM 8160 5G modem are expected to be available in the first half of 2020.
