TSMC had announced last year that it is planning to build a $12 billion dollar factory in Arizona
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is looking to expand its business in the US state of Arizona by building more manufacturing plants in the state apart from the one currently under development, as per a recent report.
Citing people familiar with the matter, a Reuter report said that the world’s largest chipmaker is planning to build an additional five chip manufacturing factories in Arizona.
This comes following the company’s announcement to expand production capacity over the following three years.
TSMC had announced last year that it is planning to build a $12 billion dollar factory in Arizona. With a planned output of 20,000 wafers per month, this fab is relatively small. It utilises the company’s 5-nanometre chip manufacturing technology for production.
TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, announced in May 2020 it would build a $12 billion factory in Arizona, an apparent win by the Trump administration in its push to wrestle global tech supply chains back from China.
The production capacity, investment and production technology of these alleged additional fabs are not yet known. A timeframe for these developments is also unclear.
The report also added that the company has ensured enough land needed to build these additional fabs is available.
TSMC last month said it planned to invest $100 billion over the next three years to increase production capacity, though it did not give details.
As per the report, one person said that this new development is in response to a request made by the US. The US government has been encouraging domestic chip manufacturing in light of the recent chip shortage and subsequent surge.
