Tata EVs for Personal Buyers Likely to Hit Indian Roads in 2020

The company is now set to deliver the second phase of 4,800 Tigors to Energy Efficiency Services (EESL).

Tata Motors is working on an electric vehicle (EV) based on its new-generation Alpha platform and plans to unveil it at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

As reported by ET, the company is targeting to roll out the first EV for personal buyers, which may be a Tigor EV, in 2020. It may be followed by a highly aspirational car based on the X451 premium hatchback.

For this new EV project, the company has reengineered its existing internal combustion engine cars, Tigor and Tiago, with an electric powertrain.

“The primary market for electric vehicles will be fleets in the next 4-5 years. But we want to attract personal buyers, too,” the daily quoted Shailesh Chandra, president of the electric mobility unit at Tata Motors, as saying.

“If aspirational electric vehicles for personal buyers are not made available, consumers might start stigmatising EVs as vehicles only for the fleet purpose,” he added.

Tata Motors to deliver 4,800 Tigors in phase II

The company is now set to deliver the second phase of 4,800 Tigors to Energy Efficiency Services (EESL). It delivered 250 cars in phase I.

Lack of charging stations, driving range and higher costs are the main factors impeding the adoption of EVs, according to Tata Motors.

Speaking to ET, Chandra noted that a range of 220-250 km on a single charge is ideal to address the buyer’s concern.
