Taiwan’s chip manufacturing companies are planning to send a high-profile delegation of semiconductor executives to India, in an effort to forward interoperability and cooperation in an important sector. The potential motives may also include a collaboration under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, for large-scale electronics manufacturing. The visit to India by the Taiwanese delegation will primarily be a follow-up of the two visits by the Indian delegation and the several meetings that were held the previous year to mainly discuss the joint ventures in chip manufacturing for electronics items, communications devices, health care systems, and motor vehicles, sources said.
“The delegation is expected to include representatives of top semiconductor manufacturers, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC),” members of the delegation announced. The exact dates of the visit are not yet finalised, but the expected timeline is supposed to be in the coming months.
The visit is crucial for the cooperation between Taiwanese manufacturers and the Indian government’s plan for semiconductor manufacturing, which was announced in December last year. The plan envisions over Rs 760 billion in investments in the semiconductor supply chain, including electronic components, subassemblies and finished goods. The visit can also be used as an opportunity to get first-hand knowledge of the potential manufacturing sites.
“Some successful efforts have been made in the past in this direction. A high-level Indian delegation attended the India-Taiwan SME Development Forum at Taipei in November 2018,” an official said.
“Taiwanese firms are welcomed in India for both investments and technology transfers in sectors such as electronics, auto components and automobiles. Indian MSMEs can benefit from Taiwanese expertise in the bamboo sector. They can also contribute to India’s semiconductor sector,” the official added.
Indo-Taiwan representative offices were established in the respective capitals for the first time in 1995. The second Taipei Economic and Cultural Center was founded in Chennai in 2012. Taiwan is India’s 16th biggest trading partner and annual bilateral commerce is worth about $7 billion.
