Suzuki And Toyota Mulling To Make EVs In Suzuki’s Gujarat Plant

Toyota and Suzuki are already in a business alliance as well as a product-development and model-sharing relationship

Automaker Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are likely to use the former’s Guajarat plant to manufacture electric cars for both the entities, as per information revealed by Maruti MD & CEO Kenichi Ayukawa.

While speaking to TOI, Ayukawa said that discussions on this matter are still on by Suzuki Japan and anything is yet to be finalized. Japan’s Suzuki Motors is the parent company of Maruti Suzuki.

Ayukawa said Toyota Japan has announced an aggressive global plan for electric models, but added that he is not sure whether any of them would come into the fold of Suzuki’s Gujarat plant. “We don’t know that yet. We have no information as yet. ”

This comes after Suzuki received approval to avail benefits under the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, and may make green cars for requirements of both Maruti and Toyota.

Toyota and Suzuki are already in a business alliance as well as a product-development and model-sharing relationship.

Toyota, last year, boosted it EV targets in trying to keep up with the ones set by its rivals. Toyota Motor Corp revealed its plans to introduce a full lineup of 30 battery electric vehicles by 2030.

The Japanese auto giant will also invest 4 trillion yen (USD 35 billion) to boost battery production.

Suzuki, on the other hand, was reported to finally begin its foray into the electric vehicles space by 2025, beginning with India.

The new EV will be released first in India, Suzuki’s stronghold where it has a market share of about 50 per cent, to be followed by launches in Japan and Europe.
