Samsung Electronics will be providing Verizon with wireless communication solutions in the United States
Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg, in July 2019, had said that his company does not use telecom equipment sourced from Huawei. While the company, had already been a customer of South Korea-headquartered Huawei, the new $6.6 billion order once gain points out the deepening ties between South-Korea and the United States.
A report by Reuters mentions that Verizon has awarded Samsung Electronics with a deal worth $6.6 billion. Under the deal, Samsung Electronics will be providing Verizon with wireless communication solutions and telecom equipment.
Huawei banned in USA
China-headquartered Huawei has been banned from doing business in USA by the Trump administration. Interestingly, Huawei had filed patent infringement lawsuits (Februray 2020) against Verizon in the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Texas. The company informed was seeking compensation for Verizon’s use of patented technology that is protected by 12 of Huawei’s US patents.
“Verizon’s products and services have benefited from patented technology that Huawei developed over many years of research and development,” said Dr Song Liuping, Huawei’s chief legal officer.
Before filing the lawsuits in Texas, Huawei negotiated with Verizon for a significant period of time, during which the company provided a detailed list of patents and factual evidence of Verizon’s use of Huawei patents. Huawi also informed that the two parties were unable to reach an agreement on license terms.
“We invest heavily in R&D because we want to provide our customers with the best possible telecommunications solutions. We share these innovations with the broader industry through license agreements,” Dr Song had noted earlier.
